- Perumpazhuthoor - 19 kms from Trivandrum en route to Kanyakumari
on the National Highway has a history of over 1000 years. It was
the location of one of the 12 Lord Maha Vishnu Temples of ancient
India .
The Ay King Karunandadakkan is believed to have renovated the
temple in 867 AD. Ays were the leading political power and had
an intensive kingdom in South Kerala before the reign of Venadu
kings. There is an inscription of Karunandadakkan, found at Vishnupuram,
Perumpazhuthoor. The ancient Vattezhuthu Inscription found on
the side of the Balipeeta of the dilapidated Vishnu temple testifies
that the temple was in existence even before 9th century AD. Vattezhuthu
is the oldest known alphabet of erstwhile South Travancore as
found out by Archaeological researchers. The inscription reads
" Soorya - Chandran marulla kaalam nyvedyathinu Uriyaari
nalkanam ", meaning as long as the sun and the moon exists,
rice is to be supplied by the state to prepare the daily 'prasadam'(kheer),
at the temple. |
